What is Moon Water

Moon water is water that has been charged by the energy of the moon. It is a way to energize water that you will use during ceremonies, spell work, making potions, or anything else you would use water with.

The lunar energy that charges moon water does change during different phases of the moon. Depending on what your intention is will depend on when you should charge your moon water. If you planned to use the moon water for a banishing spell, you would want to energize the moon water during the correct moon phase. This will be covered in more detail later on in this post.

Can I Make Moon Water with Tap Water

Yes, you can use tap water to make moon water. Moon water needs to be made with clean water. The primary requirement is that the water is clean. Other than the water being clean, the water can be tap water, filtered water, mineral water, spring water, distilled water, or even water from a lake or stream. Just make sure if you plan on drinking the water it is from a source of water that is safe to drink.

It does not matter which type of water you select; all of the different water types should be boiled before being stored in a glass container.

Uses for Moon Water

You can use moon water to replace anything you would usually use water for. You can use moon water to cleanse crystals or magickal tools. You can add moon water to a ritual cleansing bath or use it in a magickal spell. If you need to bless your space, you can use moon water to perform the blessing. Another great option is to water your magickal herbs with moon water at least once a month.

What type of container should I use for Moon Water

I always recommend using a glass mason jar. If you do not like mason jars, make sure you use a glass container of some sort with an airtight lid to store your moon water.

When it comes to the container's size, I like to work with 16 oz or 32 oz mason jars. If you plan on using the moon water during a ritual cleansing bath, you don't need to fill the whole bathtub with moon water. Moon water is just another ingredient.

Can I Make Moon Water if it is Cloudy Outside

Yes, the energy of the moon will still charge your water. There is no need to wait for clear skies to make moon water. Moon water energized on a cloudy night will contain the same amount of energy as moon water energized on a clear night sky.

Can I Add Crystals, Herbs, or Other Ingredients to Moon Water

Yes, you can add other ingredients to your moon water when you are charging it. Practitioners usually add ingredients when they charge their moon water to enhance its magickal power.

If you plan on using the moon water as part of a protection spell, you could put a protection crystal in the water before charging it and leave it in the water as the moon energizes the moon water. Crystals are not the only items you can use; if you wanted to put sage in your moon water as it charges, thats perfectly fine.

New Moon: Fresh Starts, Setting Intentions, Cleansing, and Binding.

Waxing Moon: Growth, Planning, Taking Action, and Manifestation.

Full Moon: Power, Success, Goal Coming to Fruition, Charging Items, and it is Not a Good Time to Try New Things.

Waning Moon: Releasing, Letting Go, Banishing, and Binding.

How to Make Moon Water

The first step is to decide which phase of the moon you will charge the moon water with. Once you have determined the moon phase, you will want to get a glass container with an airtight lid. The size of the container is up to you.

The next step is to cleanse and purify the container. You can do this by smudging the container before you store the water in it. If you do not know how to do this, I wrote a blog post on how to do it here

Now you will need to gather your water. Do you plan on drinking the water? If not, it does not matter what type of water you get as long as it's clean. If you are going to drink the water, use something safe to drink like distilled water, tap water, or spring water.

Next, I always boil my water, but that seems to be more of a personal touch than a common theme. It is up to you if you boil the water or not. I know of plenty of witches that do not boil their moon water.

Go ahead and fill your container up with your water. If you are going to add a crystal or something else to the container, this is the time to do it.

Now you will want to decide if you are leaving the moon water outside, on a window sill, or someplace else the moon's rays will reach it. I will usually choose to charge my moon water on a window sill if I plan on drinking the moon water. If I'm not going to drink the moon water, I will usually leave the moon water outside.

Place the moon water outside or someplace the moon's light will hit it and leave it until sunrise. When you put the moon water down, say the following incantation:

"Blessed moon, lend your strength and courage to the water I place this night. May it be filled with your everlasting love and healing power."
