How to Make a Voodoo Doll

Updated: Oct 26, 2021

What is a Voodoo Doll used for

Voodoo dolls are used for protection spells, harming someone, weight loss, good or bad luck, or many different situations. The most popular use of a Voodoo doll is for love spells. Voodoo dolls are not instruments of evil. They are instruments of intent.

This will sometimes surprise people who have little knowledge of witchcraft because Hollywood portrays Voodoo dolls as mainly a tool used to harm an adversary. Usually, by attaching or placing something of the target on or within the Voodoo doll, some examples are hair, fingernails, and personal objects. Whatever the case be Voodoo dolls usually are not portrayed in a kind light when it comes to Hollywood.

Another popular belief is that Voodoo dolls are used to communicate with a spirit or entity by the spirit or entity using the doll as a physical dwelling. This can be accomplished, but it is rarely used and not as common as Hollywood would make it out to be.

As I mentioned above, the primary use of Voodoo dolls is to enhance the power of love spells. This is a lot better than using voodoo dolls to harm people, but it is not as innocent as it might sound.

When someone uses a Voodoo doll, they use it as their target or person, they intend their magic to affect. When practicing love magic, we should never cast a spell on a particular person. You would be attempting to take away that person's free will, which is wrong and should never be attempted.

Do Voodoo Dolls work

Voodoo dolls have been used for thousands of years as part of a religion. Not everyone knows this, but Voodoo is a religion that has been carried worldwide, and all Voodoo stems from ancient Africa. The faith is mostly untouched by foreign influence, with thousands of years of indigenous tradition and heritage backing it up.

African shamans started using dolls to communicate with the Loa, like their dead ancestors, for guidance. The voodoo doll proved to be a reliable tool; it is still used for important rituals and has been for thousands of years.

As large numbers of African slaves were brought to the Americas by the slave trade, religions and customs began to mix. Voodoo became a mish-mash of European folk magic, Native American healing arts, and Catholicism. This caused Voodoo dolls to be used in a variety of different ways than they used to be.

To answer the question, do Voodoo dolls work? Yes, the shamans used them for thousands of years for a reason, they worked. Voodoo dolls gained popularity in the Americas because they worked. The only difference was in the Americas; they did not only see Voodoo dolls as part of a religion, allowing them to use the Voodoo doll's to their full potential.

Are Voodoo Dolls Safe

It depends on what your intention is for your Voodoo doll. Remember, Voodoo dolls are not instruments of evil. They are instruments of intent. If you intend to use your Voodoo doll to enhance a protection spell, then your Voodoo doll will help keep you or your loved ones safe.

If you intend to use your Voodoo doll to harm, torture, control a person, or for something else sinister, you could very well be placing yourself in danger.

You should never use Voodoo dolls or any magic to harm someone physically, emotionally, or mentally because of The Rule of Three.

The Rule of Three (also known as Three-fold Law and Law of Return) is a belief that whatever energy you put out into this world, be it positive or negative, will be returned to you three times.

The Rule of Three is a tenet held by most Wiccans. Not all Wiccans agree with The Rule of Three. Some believe that the return is not necessarily threefold.

What type of material should I use for a Voodoo Doll

When making a Voodoo doll, you can use practically anything when it comes to the material used in making the doll.

Even though you can use anything when you make your Voodoo doll, you should consider your goal or intention for the Voodoo doll before selecting your materials.

Different materials have different magical associations. For example, if you intended to make a Voodoo doll out of twigs and it was for a protection spell, then using Cedar as your twigs would make sense. Cedar is known to have magical associations with protection, purification, prosperity, and healing.

Also, your Voodoo doll's color should be taken into consideration, depending on what your intentions are. The color of the doll has powerful inclinations for its intended purpose.

Examples of colors and what they are intended for:

  • White – positive, purification, or healing.

  • Red – love, attraction, or power.

  • Green – growth, wealth, money, and fertility.

  • Yellow – success and confidence.

  • Purple – spirit realm, wisdom, or psychic exploration.

  • Blue – love, and peace.

  • Black – negative; it can be used to dispel negative energy or to summon it.

These seven colors are also found on pins and needles. They are stuck into the doll to emphasize the intention.

How to Make a Voodoo Doll

The most popular type of Voodoo doll is made from cloth, so we will make a cloth voodoo doll to enhance a healing spell for a loved one.

The first step will be to get some white cloth (white is magically associated with healing) and cut out two pieces in a person's form.

The next step is to sew the doll, leaving an opening to add your filling. Use Spanish moss with the following herbs to fill your Voodoo doll.

Comfrey: This herb is renowned as a healing herb and is a logical choice for a healing spell.

Rosemary: This herb has magical associations with healing, health, and protection.

Cinnamon: Add a pinch of cinnamon. Cinnamon is a multipurpose herb that can be added to anything to increase the potency of the spell.

Now you will want to get a taglock (taglocks are what links the Voodoo doll to its target. The more personal, the better). A taglock can be hair, skin, blood, nail clippings, or even the person's handwriting.

Let's assume your taglock is a piece of your loved one's hair. You will want to place the hair into the doll, and once the taglock and filing are complete, sew the Voodoo doll closed.

Take a photograph of your loved one and tape or glue it to your doll's face. You can even write the person's full name on the back of the picture.

Now add any additional identifying characteristics of your loved one to the Voodoo doll. This can be adding a tattoo that your loved one has, a scar, or even adding a birthmark.

The last step is to place a white pin or needle into the doll. Remember colored pins and needles are used to emphasize your intention.

And that's it, you have made a Voodoo doll with magical associations with healing.
